I draw a lot when on coffee breaks, days out in LA or Santa Barbara, when traveling, etc. So I’ll have to thank whoever this man is for being my subject on his (what must have been) usual study night at the local coffee spot. (Also, just a note, he was quite far away. I have yet to explore my artist’s boundaries of creeping up close to unsuspecting strangers.)

11. People on Cardboard

I received a new book in the mail a few weeks ago that I couldn’t wait to start reading. When I opened the box, however, I found two very clean panels of cardboard protecting the book. As interesting as bubble wrap was to me when I was five, I went straight for the cardboard. They were too nice to throw away so I took a 10 minute time-out to apply some Sharpie to them. Now they are a diptych of an angry couple during a black tie affair. And… that is the story of how I accumulate things.

10. Green Smoke

Circa 2003, off a cigarette ad that, minus the product, I really liked. It’s been on a wall in every dorm, apartment and house I’ve lived in throughout and after college. Prismacolor pencils have a special place with me.
